K-Care and Y-Care

The before and after school child care programs are open to elementary through middle school students who are enrolled in one of the six Portage Township Elementary Schools that are located in Portage.

The K-Care and Y-Care programs are available to those who need extended hours of child care either before school, after school or both. With the combination of the two child care programs, the YMCA can provide child care for all students from Kindergarten through middle school from 6:30 A.M. until 6:00 P.M.

K-Care provides child care for the Kindergarten student during the half day that they are not in class. (K-Care can be used with Y-Care to meet your total school age child care needs.)

Y-Care provides child care for the elementary school students including Kindergarten students before and after school.

Both K-Care and Y-Care are provided by
the Portage Township YMCA in cooperation with Portage Township Schools

After-School Program has Childcare Scholarships Available

The Portage Township YMCA hosts before and after school childcare (Y-Care) at three school sites in the Portage Township School District. The program hours are 6:30am to 6:00pm.  All children in Y-Care must have a primary membership at the YMCA, a cost of $70 per year for elementary school students. The YMCA offers scholarships to help parents pay for childcare.  The scholarship covers the membership to the YMCA for the school year and up to 50% of weekly program costs, based on a sliding scale.  The YMCA also accepts Hoosier Childcare CCDF vouchers.  Please contact the Portage Township YMCA for your school-aged childcare needs. For more information regarding this program please contact Amanda Glasser, SACC Coordinator at 219-762-YMCA(9622) or at amanda@ymcaofportage.org.

Portage Township YMCA After-school Program Asking for Supplies

The Portage Township YMCA before- and after-school program, Y-Care, is asking for donations of the following supplies from businesses or individuals in the community. Please consider donating any of the following items from our program “WISH LIST” so that we may have crafts and activities available for children: children’s scissors, glue sticks, crayons, colored pencils, pencils, puzzles, plain paper, construction paper, pipe cleaners, pom poms, balls, jump ropes, board games, legos, toys, electric pencil sharperners, DVD players, TVs, Wii games, CD players, children’s CDs, bean bag chairs, lamps, etc. The Y-Care program services more than 90 children daily before and after school for minimal fees. As a non-profit organization, the YMCA prides itself on making sure that no child is refused services, regardless of ability to pay.  Due to limited funding, we were unable to purchase all of the supplies necessary to keep projects ongoing with the children we serve. For more information regarding these programs please contact Amanda Glasser, SACC Coordinator at 219-762-YMCA(9622) or at amanda@ymcaofportage.org.
